Hua Hong to expand silicon photonics capacity under 2027 plan

Hua Hong chairman Bai Peng named silicon photonics and power management chips as core areas of the foundry's 2027 expansion plan.

Hua Hong Semiconductor said it will significantly expand its silicon photonics production capacity to meet demand from AI infrastructure, naming silicon photonics and power management semiconductors as core areas of its 2027 expansion plan, according to SCMP.

Chairman and president Bai Peng said the company wants to take part in all silicon-based devices inside optical modules. Hua Hong already supplies microcontrollers, power management chips and power semiconductors for optical modules and is stepping up related development projects.

The company reported third-quarter revenue of $987.1 million, up 19.9% year on year and a quarterly record. Net profit attributable to controlling shareholders came to $123.4 million, up 147.1%. Excluding the acquired Huali Microelectronics, revenue was $803.4 million, above previous guidance.

Factory utilization reached 102.9% in the third quarter. Hua Hong expects shortages and price increases for some products to continue amid strong orders for MCUs, flash memory and power management chips.

Hua Hong has been moving equipment into its new Fab 9B plant in Wuxi, China since mid-September 2026. A large portion of the added 2027 capacity is already allocated to customers, so supply constraints are expected to continue even after the expansion, with utilization including the new facilities expected to stay around 100%.
