Hyosung Heavy Industries Builds HILS System for 2GW HVDC Controller

The HILS system at Hyosung's Gwacheon research center links a physical HVDC controller with a virtual 2GW-class converter valve and power grid.

Hyosung Heavy Industries announced it has completed the construction of a verification system for its self-developed 2GW-class HVDC controller. The system, called HILS, was built at the company's Gwacheon research center in Gyeonggi Province, according to bloter.net.

The HILS system is designed to test and verify the performance and stability of the 2GW-class HVDC controller. It links a physical HVDC controller with a virtual 2GW-class converter valve and power grid.

Hyosung Heavy Industries said the entire HILS system — including design, installation, testing and operation — was built using proprietary technology.

KEPCO project participation

In September of this year, Hyosung Heavy Industries was officially selected as a participating company in the valve and controller sectors of KEPCO's "Large-Capacity Voltage-Type HVDC Localization and Demonstration Project."

The company's HVDC work dates back to 2012, when it began with the Jeju 20MW-class voltage-type HVDC demonstration project. In 2024, it applied and operated a 200MW-class core facility at the Yangju substation, and it has been operating a 200MW-class voltage-type HVDC system installed there.
