Hyundai India sales near 10 million after 9.88 million through September
Hyundai needs 115,040 more units to pass 10 million cumulative sales in India, a milestone the company expects to reach within this year.
Hyundai Motor said its cumulative sales in India reached 9,884,960 units through September, leaving the automaker 115,040 units short of the 10 million mark, according to zdnet.co.kr. The company expects to surpass 10 million cumulative sales in India within this year.
SUV models accounted for the bulk of this year's volume. From January to September, Hyundai sold 137,756 Creta, 100,769 Venue and 62,455 Exter units in India. The Creta Electric, the brand's locally produced EV, added 5,107 units over the same period.
In 2025 Hyundai launched the Creta EV, its first locally produced electric vehicle in India.
Three decades of local production
Hyundai established its India subsidiary in 1996 and began local production and sales with the Santro at its Chennai plant in 1998. Cumulative sales passed 1 million in 2007 and 5 million in 2017.
The Creta, launched in 2015 as a local strategic SUV, anchored a lineup later expanded with the Venue, Alcazar and Exter. Last year, SUVs accounted for 398,937 of Hyundai's 571,878 India sales, or 69.8%.
Hyundai operates Chennai plants 1 and 2 and a Pune plant, with total annual production capacity of 1 million units — 824,000 at Chennai and 170,000 at Pune. The company plans to raise Pune capacity to 250,000 units by 2028 and 320,000 by 2030, lifting India's annual production capacity above 1.1 million units, and aims to increase parts localization in India to over 90% by 2030 while expanding export share to as much as 30%.
At the '2026 CEO Investor Day', CEO José Muñoz said Hyundai aims to raise the SUV share of its India sales to 80% by 2030.
