ibisWorks launches free open-source office suite ibisOffice
The Rust-built suite runs on Windows, Mac and in the browser, and processes files locally without sending them to a server.
ibisWorks has released ibisOffice, a free open-source office suite that can view and edit docx, xlsx and pptx files. The release, dated October 12, 2026, covers a desktop app for Windows and Mac plus a browser version built on Wasm and WebGPU.
The suite was written from scratch in Rust with GPU-accelerated rendering, and ibisWorks says it does not use code carried over from older office suites. It can open files with macros enabled.
Compatibility with Microsoft Office is checked by 70,000 pixel comparison tests per day, according to ibisWorks. The browser version processes files locally and does not send them to any server.
The company is also the developer behind the illustration app ibisPaint. Its source code for ibisOffice is published on GitHub under a dual AGPL-3.0-only and commercial license.
