IBM: 80% of firms took AI incidents to board level

IBM research presented at Think EMEA found that only 40% of those companies turned the incident into new governance investment or policy.

IBM presented research on AI governance at its Think EMEA event in London showing that 80% of surveyed companies said an AI incident had been escalated to board level. According to TechRadar, only 40% of those companies were able to use the incident to secure new investment in governance or cement a new policy.

At a media Q&A at the London event, Ana Paula Assis, Senior Vice President and Chair for IBM EMEA and APAC, discussed balancing AI innovation with governance.

Assis said AI has become the business model rather than something that merely supports the business.

She said governance and security are enablers for scaling AI in corporate environments, particularly in highly regulated industries.

In an earlier keynote at Think EMEA, IBM said it had achieved savings of around USD 5.5 billion in improved productivity and efficiency by using AI to improve core processes, with the money redirected to areas including R&D and innovation.
