iFixit teardown gives iPhone Duo 5/10 repairability score

The score is the highest iFixit has handed a foldable, though display repairs remain costly and dust still gets inside.

iFixit has published a teardown of Apple's iPhone Duo and awarded the foldable a 5/10 repairability score, according to the repair site. It is the highest score iFixit has given to a foldable device to date.

The teardown found that the inner display's matte nano-texture cover layer scatters reflections and helps mask the crease. Under a microscope, iFixit observed oval-shaped subpixels arranged at various angles, which it believes reduce artifacts and further hide the centre crease. The nano-texture outer layer can be replaced relatively easily without swapping the OLED underneath, iFixit said.

Repairing the display panel itself remains expensive and difficult, as with other foldables. Dust entered the iPhone Duo's USB-C port, speaker grills and hinge, though less glowing dust got inside than in the Galaxy Z Fold8 or the Pixel 11 Pro Fold.

iFixit also suspects part of the phone's complex hinge sometimes fails to descend properly. An accordion cable passing over that hinge area near the battery edge may concentrate pressure and cause the audible crack and broken screens reported by some users.

Apple did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
