iPhone Duo Pre-Order Activations to Roll Out in Batches in South Korea

SK Telecom, KT and LG Uplus secured initial iPhone Duo stock at about one tenth of previous flagship launches, so activations will be staggered.

South Korea's three mobile carriers are expected to activate pre-ordered iPhone Duo units in staggered batches based on reservation order, because initial stock is only about one tenth of the level seen at previous flagship smartphone launches.

SK Telecom, KT and LG Uplus have each secured that smaller initial allocation, and they expect batch-based sales while supply remains limited, according to ZDNet Korea.

One carrier official said orders can be duplicated across carriers, so pre-orders do not directly translate into sales, and that the company will adjust sales to real demand. The same official said that if the initial batch sells out, the company will keep securing additional stock to minimize subscriber inconvenience.

An echo of 2009

South Korea has seen this pattern before. In November 2009, when the iPhone first arrived in the country, KT took tens of thousands of iPhone 3GS pre-orders within hours and the first batch sold out quickly.

Amid global supply shortages that year, KT allocated stock across dozens of batches according to reservation order, with first-round buyers activated on launch day and later buyers receiving devices when additional stock arrived. Subscribers passed 100,000 within days of pre-orders opening, and some buyers waited weeks for their devices.

More recently, articles dated October 14, 2026 reported that carriers' profit calculations for selling the iPhone Duo were complicated, with monthly installments of 160,000 won, while articles dated October 16, 2026 reported signs of pre-order shortages and competition among the three carriers over subsidies.
