Kakao plans December closed beta for Kanana Space AI

Kakao will test its KakaoTalk AI service in December, which responds to voice and text requests via the character Ryan.

Kakao plans to begin a closed beta test (CBT) of Kanana Space, its AI service for KakaoTalk, in December, the company said. The service brings up the character Ryan when the user swipes down on the screen with two fingers, and takes requests by voice and text.

The company has also developed Kanana-o, an on-device multimodal omni model that handles text, images and audio and can run on devices such as smartphones.

Kanana Space will initially run on a server model. Kakao intends to apply on-device models over the long term, so that simple tasks are processed on the phone while complex tasks are handled by a frontier model.

At if(kakao)26 on the 13th, Byeongseok Noh, Kakao's Unified Foundation Model achievement leader, explained the on-device approach, saying requests that can be processed on the device are handled on the user's smartphone before being sent to the server, according to etnews.com.

Kakao released its self-developed vision encoder as open source on the 21st and will release a self-developed speech encoder as open source within the year.
