KDE Plasma 6.8 Arrives Alongside KDE's 30th Birthday
Plasma 6.8 adds accessibility, system monitoring and remote desktop improvements, plus the Kup backup tool as a standard part of Plasma.
KDE released Plasma 6.8 on October 14, 2026, a launch that coincides with the desktop environment's 30th birthday, according to gamingonlinux.com.
The release adds new accessibility features and improves system monitoring. Remote desktop gains better performance and quality, and Spectacle can now include system audio and microphone input when casting or recording the screen. Windows from third-party apps also get a nicer appearance, and the new Union theming system receives further enhancements.
Performance work continues across the desktop: Plasma 6.8 uses less memory overall, Nvidia GPUs now use triple buffering by default, and HDR looks better when an ICC colour profile is in use.
New tools and smaller fixes
A new kscreenctl tool makes managing displays from the command line easier and opens the door to scripting and automation. Kup, the KDE backup tool, has been polished and is now released as part of Plasma. EAP-TTLS authentication support has been added for StrongSwan VPNs, and auto-starting apps can be enabled or disabled without deleting and recreating their entries.
Display Configuration now lets arrow keys move screens pixel by pixel, the system shows a warning notification when printing to an unavailable printer, and copying secrets such as passwords to the clipboard explains why they are left out of history. Emojis in the Emoji Selector can be shown at different sizes. The release includes countless bug fixes and small tweaks.
Plasma has been used in the Desktop Mode on SteamOS for the Steam Deck, Steam Machine and Steam Frame.
