KERIS asks SchoolNet offices to keep E-ADS out of 5th-phase RFPs

The education research institute is also discussing measures with the Ministry of Education to limit impact on the private security market.

KERIS has asked provincial and metropolitan education offices preparing RFPs for the fifth phase of the SchoolNet project not to include E-ADS-related content, according to etnews.com. The request concerns the free cyberattack detection software KERIS developed and distributed to education institutions.

E-ADS combines network threat detection and malicious-file detection with analysis based on deep packet inspection. KERIS distributed it at no cost to reduce education institutions' spending on replacing aging security equipment.

Some education offices named E-ADS directly or indirectly in SchoolNet RFPs, raising unfair competition concerns because its functions overlap with private TMS and APT solutions. KERIS has also faced criticism for not conducting a software business impact assessment during the development and distribution of E-ADS.

KERIS said it is discussing additional measures with the Ministry of Education to minimize shrinkage of the private security market while raising security levels at education institutions. Options under discussion include helping private companies use KERIS's E-ADS technology, or encouraging private security firms to advance related technology based on E-ADS's technical direction.
