Korea Proposes KS Standard for Water-to-Water Heat Pumps

The draft standard, open for comment until November 30, limits performance testing to products with rated capacity of 2110 kW or less.

The Korea Agency for Technology and Standards has announced a draft Korean Industrial Standards (KS) for water-to-water hydrothermal source heat pumps and is collecting public opinions on it until November 30, according to etnews.com.

The draft limits performance testing to products with a rated cooling and heating capacity of 2110 kW (approximately 600RT) or less. Products exceeding 600RT are not covered by the proposed standard's performance test scope.

There is currently no clear KS testing and certification system for hydrothermal source heat pumps in the 600RT to 1000RT class, and no testing or certification system exists for air-to-heat industrial large-capacity heat pumps either.

Four years ago, a prior study did not sufficiently secure and verify data on products of 600RT or above. The current KS heat pump testing scope covers only products up to 150RT.

Last year, a 1000RT-class large-capacity hydrothermal heat pump was introduced at the Korea Trade Center, the first of its kind in Korea. Units of 1000RT or higher class have begun to be deployed at industrial sites such as the paper manufacturing industry.

The government has been pursuing the K-GX (Green Great Transition) policy to expand heat pump distribution as a core technology.

Quick answers

What products does the draft KS cover?

It covers water-to-water hydrothermal source heat pumps with a rated cooling and heating capacity of 2110 kW (approximately 600RT) or less.

How long is the public comment period?

The Korea Agency for Technology and Standards is collecting opinions until November 30.

Are products above 600RT covered by the test scope?

No. Products exceeding 600RT are not covered by the proposed standard's performance test scope.
