KT to end new 3G sign-ups, offers free handsets to move users to LTE, 5G
KT will stop accepting 3G number transfers and device changes and is offering free replacements among three handsets, plus 24-month fee discounts.
KT said on November 2, 2026, that it will stop accepting new 3G subscriptions, 3G number transfers and 3G device changes, and will offer incentives to remaining 3G users to move to LTE or 5G, according to techm.kr.
Under the offer, KT's 3G subscribers can receive a free handset replacement, choosing among the Classic Folder, Galaxy A17 and Motorola G77. The carrier is also applying monthly fee discounts for 24 months, with total discounts of 288,000 won, 336,000 won or 168,000 won depending on the option selected.
KT said it will not charge early-termination penalties or claw back the points and fee discounts it gave customers as 3G compensation.
The move follows SK Telecom, which in August 2026 blocked new 3G subscriptions, 3G number transfers and 3G device changes ahead of KT. As of August 2026, KT had 56,801 3G handset subscribers, 0.004% of its total handset subscribers, while SK Telecom had 67,147, according to techm.kr. LG Uplus has no 3G service.
3G was commercialized in 2003, 23 years before KT's announcement.
