Laytr launches as a private read-it-later app for Apple devices

Laytr lets users save articles, recipes, videos, and PDFs into a private on-device archive with iCloud sync and no account required.

Laytr has launched as a new app that lets users save almost anything they find on the web, including articles, recipes, screenshots, videos, PDFs, bookmarks, and tabs. The app automatically sorts saved file types and lets users organize them into collections called "cases." Users can also set reminders for saved items on chosen dates.

Saved content is stored as a private archive accessible only on the user's device, with no account required and no developer access. Content syncs across Apple devices like iPhone, iPad, and Mac via iCloud. The entire archive can be exported as a ZIP file with readable Markdown and HTML for every item, note, tag, date, and collection.

Laytr is developed by Ontario-based indie developer Mostafa Talaat under his company Waitery Inc. The app is free to try with a limit of 30 saved items. Premium costs $1.99 per month, $14.99 per year, or a one-time $39.99 for lifetime access, with a sale price of $24.99 until the end of December.

If a subscription lapses, users retain their saves but cannot add more until rejoining or reducing the archive to under 30 items. Laytr imports old Pocket exports and plans to add more languages over time.

In August, Mozilla's read-it-later app Pocket shut down, leading to the emergence of alternatives. Talaat was inspired to build Laytr after hearing about Pocket's shutdown, according to TechCrunch.
