LG Display targets 2029 mass production of FLiPP OLED, Sigmaintell says

The non-FMM RGB OLED technology was shown as a 27-inch panel in August 2026, a size that matches Apple's 5K Studio Display.

LG Display has set a goal of mass-producing FLiPP OLED panels in 2029, according to market research firm Sigmaintell, as reported by ZDNet Korea. The technology forms RGB OLED subpixels through an exposure process after organic materials are deposited, avoiding the fine metal mask (FMM) method used in conventional RGB OLED production.

Sigmaintell's forecast states that mass production capability for FLiPP has not yet been verified.

Industry observers suggest LG Display is aiming the technology at Apple's Studio Display supply. The 27-inch FLiPP display the company first showed at IMID in Busan in August 2026 matches the 27-inch size of Apple's 5K Studio Display. One industry official said LG Display has assigned more than 100 people to FLiPP research and development.

LG Display has publicly kept its schedule open. At its FLiPP online tech seminar on October 8, 2026, the company said the technology is still in development and that no mass-production timing has been decided, adding that it will spend the following year sorting existing W-OLED and LCD equipment into reuse, retrofit and new-equipment categories.

A crowded IT OLED field

Competitors are moving on their own timelines. Apple's first OLED MacBook panels are currently made by Samsung Display on its IT 8.6-generation A6 line using FMM, and Samsung Display holds more than 70% of the global notebook OLED market. Apple's iMac OLED project, expected around 2029-2030, is currently addressed only by Samsung Display with large QD-OLED technology.

Among Chinese panel makers, Visionox aims to mass-produce ViP-method notebook OLEDs in the second half of 2027 on the first phase of its 8.6-generation V5 line, BOE began mass production on its IT 8.6-generation B16 line in the second quarter and is expanding phase-one capacity from 8K to 16K sheets per month, and CSOT started mass-producing monitor OLEDs on its 5.5-generation T12 inkjet printing line in the third quarter ahead of running its 8.6-generation T8 line in the second half of 2027. Sigmaintell forecasts OLED penetration in the global notebook market will rise from 8% in 2026 to 20% in 2030.
