LG Display says FLiPP OLED tech hits monitors and laptops first
LG Display confirmed FLiPP will debut on monitors and laptops, with mass production targeted for late 2027 and products possibly at CES 2028.
LG Display has confirmed that its next-generation FLiPP OLED manufacturing technology will arrive first on laptops and monitors, according to the trade publication The Elec. Mass production is expected by late 2027, which could put first products on show at CES 2028.
FLiPP, short for FMM-Less innovative Pixel Patterning, removes the fine metal masks traditionally used in OLED production. Instead, material is deposited across the glass, covered with a protective layer, and then refined through photolithography and etching. LG Display reports a process utilization rate of over 93%, compared with 75% for a conventional FMM process.
The company also reports that FLiPP raises utilization of organic emissive materials from 40% to 74% and lifts the pixel aperture ratio to 65%. The technology enables luminance 1.6x higher, longevity 2.4x longer, or 13% lower power consumption.
LG Display Chief Technology Officer Choi Young-seok said the technology is still in its first development stage, with product development and mass production as the next steps. The first mass-production effort will focus on smaller displays for monitors, with laptops also planned, based on 23.5-inch panels.
Production lines under evaluation
Cho Heung-ryeol, head of LG Display's Next-Generation Display Division, said the company is evaluating whether existing LCD and WOLED production lines can be reused without major modifications, or whether new plant must be purchased. LG Display still plans for production to start in around a year.
Quick answers
When will LG Display's FLiPP OLED technology reach mass production?
LG Display expects to reach mass production by late 2027, so first products might appear at CES 2028.
Which devices will use FLiPP first?
The first mass-production effort will focus on monitors with smaller displays, with laptops also planned, based on 23.5-inch panels.
What does FLiPP change in OLED manufacturing?
It eliminates the fine metal masks traditionally used in OLED manufacturing, depositing materials across the glass, applying a protective layer, and refining them via photolithography and etching.
