LG Display patents OLED wiring design for under-display cameras

The US patent, registered October 20, covers a transparent wiring structure aligned with cathode openings to cut light loss to sensors beneath the screen.

LG Display registered a US patent on October 20 covering an OLED display structure designed to improve light transmittance to under-display cameras and optical sensors, according to inews24.com. The patent, numbered US 12,772,683 B2 and titled "Display device and display panel," contains 26 claims.

The filing describes a structure that makes some of the wiring in the screen area above a camera transparent and aligns it with openings formed in the OLED cathode, reducing the amount of light lost before it reaches the sensor.

The technology is aimed at under-display cameras (UDC) in smartphones, and the patent states it can also be applied to tablets, laptops, monitors and TVs, as well as to infrared, proximity and ambient light sensors.

The patent covers only the light-transmission structure of the display and does not demonstrate how cameras or sensors perform in actual products. LG Display has not disclosed any product or mass-production plan using the technology.

Earlier filings

The technology was first filed in Korea on October 18, 2022. LG Display filed the US application on October 5, 2023, and the application was published in April 2024.
