LG Display Takes Sole Ownership of 9 US OLED Material Patents
The nine US patents, filed between 2019 and 2024, cover green host, hole blocking layer and charge generation layer technologies, according to an industry official.
LG Display has acquired sole ownership of nine US patents related to OLED materials that it had previously filed jointly with LT Materials, according to ZDNet Korea. The two companies notified the US Patent and Trademark Office that all rights to those patents had been transferred.
The nine US patents were filed between 2019 and 2024. Two are registered patents and seven are still pending applications.
An industry official said the patents now solely held by LG Display mainly cover green host, hole blocking layer (HBL) and charge generation layer (CGL) technologies.
The move follows a similar step in Korea. LG Display and LT Materials jointly filed 23 patents in Korea, mostly on OLED materials and some on LED technology, and submitted a change or correction report for them on 19 September 2026.
Supply relationships
LT Materials has supplied LG Display with green host, green prime, CPL for small and medium OLED, and CPL, n-CGL and HIL for large white (W)-OLED, according to market research firm UBI Research. Material Science, in which LG Display holds a 7.9% stake and is the third-largest shareholder, began a state-funded project in July 2026 to develop CGL for tandem OLED with the aim of supplying LG Display. Toray and Merck have also supplied OLED materials to LG Display.
