LibreOffice Hits 9.4 Million Downloads in Eight Weeks
The Document Foundation says 2026 downloads have already passed the whole of 2025, with weekly totals once under 1 million.
LibreOffice was downloaded 9.4 million times between August 24 and October 18, 2026, according to figures reported by The Document Foundation, the organization behind the open-source productivity suite. The eight-week total far exceeds the project's earlier pace, when weekly downloads stayed under 1 million.
The Foundation said downloads in 2026 have already surpassed the full total for 2025.
In its explanation for the growth, the Foundation pointed to the project's consistency, its use of standard document formats and its robustness. It also cited digital sovereignty and the fact that LibreOffice is not a clone of the leading office suite.
The figures follow the release of LibreOffice 26.8 in August 2026, which added support for Microsoft Office features and came with a statement that the suite has no AI features.
Microsoft recently discontinued Publisher, removing one more option from the desktop publishing market that LibreOffice competes in, while Europe has taken further steps toward digital sovereignty, which may have driven adoption of open-source software.
