Microsoft adds Magnetic Connect charging to Surface Laptop Ultra
The new magnetic feature sits inside a single right-side USB-C port, rather than a proprietary connector.
Microsoft has unveiled the Surface Laptop Ultra along with Magnetic Connect, a magnetic charging feature built into one of the laptop's USB-C ports, according to howtogeek.com. The company positions the feature as an equivalent to Apple's MagSafe.
Magnetic Connect uses magnets built into the right-side USB-C port to attach Microsoft's matching power cable. Because the port itself is a standard USB-C port rather than a proprietary connector, it is not a separate charging interface added to the chassis.
Only one port on the Surface Laptop Ultra supports Magnetic Connect. Microsoft has not said whether other Surface models will offer the feature.
Older Surface charging stays put
Microsoft's recently updated Surface Laptop and Surface Pro still use the older Surface Connect charging format.
