Microsoft Teams to get AI phishing detection from November 2026

Microsoft says the context-aware protection will flag impersonation and social engineering without keeping message content or requiring admin action.

Microsoft has announced that Microsoft Teams will begin using AI-powered, context-aware phishing detection in early November 2026, according to bleepingcomputer.com. The capability is designed to spot phishing, social engineering, impersonation attempts and deceptive intent, including cases that carry no malicious links or files.

The feature enters a targeted release phase expected to finish by mid-November 2026, with general availability worldwide expected between early and mid-December 2026. IT admins will not need to take any action to enable it.

According to Microsoft, the detection analyses conversation context without retaining message content, and customer message content is not kept for model training or other secondary uses. The system focuses on higher-risk scenarios such as first-contact chats from external users.

The update was published in the Microsoft 365 Message Center. Last week, a Microsoft 365 Roadmap entry first revealed the AI-powered phishing detection that draws on conversation context.

It follows other Teams security changes from the company. In December, Microsoft said admins could lock external users via the Defender portal starting in January to stop cybercrime groups abusing Teams. In August, Microsoft began rolling out a Teams meeting protection policy that lets admins block identified external bots from meetings.

Last month, Microsoft said Teams will blur QR codes from external senders and let users report suspicious guest invitations. In early October, it announced plans for third-party deepfake detection and impersonation protection in Teams meetings.
