Microsoft to turn Windows 11 taskbar search into AI command bar
At its Windows and Surface event, Microsoft said the search box will accept conversational commands, following a June Patch Tuesday that lowered the search minimum to two characters.
Microsoft announced at its Windows and Surface event on October 7, 2026, in San Francisco that it will turn the Windows 11 taskbar search box into a conversational AI command interface, according to tech42.co.kr. Windows and Devices VP Pavan Davuluri demonstrated typing “turn on dark mode” into the taskbar search box, which immediately switched the screen theme.
Microsoft said that from this autumn, users will be able to issue short conversational commands through the search menu to perform thousands of tasks across Windows. The redesigned search menu allows conversational interaction with Copilot without opening the standalone Copilot app.
The company detailed a hybrid intelligence system that routes tasks between local models and cloud computing. Microsoft AI's MAI Code 1.1 Flash is a 13.7-billion-parameter mixture-of-experts model with 5 billion active parameters, 53GB in size and 80% smaller than the cloud version through quantization and speculative decoding. A demonstration showed Autopilot helping organize tax documents by locating, renaming and compressing files and drafting an email locally without sending data to the cloud.
Microsoft also introduced the Microsoft Execution Container (MXC) SDK, a sandbox for safely running untrusted code such as model outputs, plugins and tools. MXC offers process isolation and session isolation, with claims that process isolation blocks access to files and network domains outside a defined policy. GitHub Copilot CLI has already adopted MXC process isolation, while NVIDIA brought MXC-based OpenShell to Windows and companies including Hermes, Manus and OpenClo integrated MXC.
The announcement follows a Patch Tuesday update on June 11, 2026, that cut Windows Search's minimum query length from three characters to two and made local files appear above web results. Until May 2026, Windows 11 required a minimum of three characters before search would start returning results. WindowsLatest called the June update the biggest Patch Tuesday of the year, citing 200 security patches, including fixes for 33 critical vulnerabilities and three publicly disclosed zero-days.
