Spending on OpenAI-related services exceeded spending on Anthropic's services in 47 of 50 US states between June and August, according to YipitData figures reported by Business Insider. The analysis drew on US consumer credit and debit card payments.

Anthropic led in three states: California, Massachusetts and Montana. Claude spending was also higher in Washington D.C.

OpenAI's share of spending passed 70% in eight states, with the highest reading in Delaware at 82%.

The YipitData findings were reflected in the "Top 100 Gen AI Consumer Apps" report from Andreessen Horowitz (a16z).

Paid subscriber context

In earlier a16z findings, US paid consumer subscriber numbers for ChatGPT were about three times those of Claude and Gemini. Among Claude paid users, 7.3% used the top personal plan costing $100 or more per month, compared with 1.1% for ChatGPT.
