OpenAI says ChatGPT search queries reach about 20% of Google's volume
OpenAI's Adam Fry disclosed the figure at a press event on November 3, 2026, and said ChatGPT ads have not hurt usage.
OpenAI's head of consumer product for ChatGPT, Adam Fry, said at a press event on November 3, 2026 that the volume of search-related queries on ChatGPT has reached about one-fifth of Google's search queries, according to digitaltoday.co.kr.
OpenAI said the count covers only questions that lead to an actual web search, and does not include answers ChatGPT handles without performing a web search. The company did not disclose the source or methodology of the data behind the comparison with Google.
Fry also said that advertising on ChatGPT has not negatively affected product use or usage volume. OpenAI announced last month an ad format that displays sponsored products and services as images.
