OpenAI DevDay 2026: Aeon Agent Rumors and GPT-6 Astra Hype

OpenAI's 2026 DevDay is approaching, and the rumor mill is already churning. The company is reportedly preparing to release an AI agent called Aeon, according to The Verge. OpenAI has also been hyping its frontier model GPT-6 Astra, and president Greg Brockman recently said it is not unreasonable to feel we are now in the AGI era.

The agent space is heating up. Meta's Muse topped the App Store charts and reached 600,000 daily active users in the US, according to Apptopia. Google's consumer-facing agent, Gemini Spark, has upwards of 30 external service partners including Dropbox, Uber, and Spotify. Instinct offers an agent usable over iMessage and other chat apps, while OpenClaw is an open-source AI agent platform. OpenAI employs Peter Steinberger, the creator of OpenClaw.

OpenAI's own agent history includes early consumer-facing agents focused on computer use and research released in mid-2025, and an agentic API feature demoed at the 2024 DevDay. This year's event could also bring updates on AI hardware devices OpenAI is building with Jony Ive, though those remain rumors.

One note of caution: a patched vulnerability previously allowed attackers to take control of accounts, a reminder that agentic systems carry security risks as they gain capabilities.
