OpenAI reportedly plans to buy Google TPUs, first step beyond Nvidia

Financial terms, chip quantities and delivery schedules of the reported purchase were not disclosed, according to The Information.

OpenAI plans to purchase Google's tensor processing units (TPUs) for AI computing, according to The Information. Financial terms, quantities and delivery schedules of the reported purchase were not disclosed.

The reported deal would mark OpenAI's first move to obtain computing capacity from a supplier other than Nvidia, which has been its main GPU source.

Google has expanded commercial sales of its TPUs to selected external customers. In 2025, OpenAI began renting Google's AI chips to support its products, and the company recently announced that its advanced AI models would become available through Google Cloud.

OpenAI has also been developing its own silicon: in June 2026 it announced it had designed an AI chip with Broadcom and said it intended to deploy it before the end of 2026.

On Alphabet's earnings side, finance chief Anat Ashkenazi said the company expected to recognise a small portion of revenue from TPU sales agreements by the end of 2026, with most recognised during 2027. According to the report, Alphabet, Amazon and Microsoft are collectively expected to spend as much as $600 billion on AI infrastructure during 2026.
