OpenAI launches GPT-6.1 Sol at DevDay, priced at one-fifth of GPT-6 Astra

OpenAI announced GPT-6.1 Sol at its DevDay event on Tuesday. The new model is available starting today to all Plus, Pro, Business, Enterprise, and Edu users in ChatGPT Work and Codex.

According to OpenAI, GPT-6.1 Sol delivers nearly the same level of intelligence as GPT-6 Astra for agentic coding, computer use, and professional work. The company says it costs one-fifth the standard input and output token prices of GPT-6 Astra.

OpenAI says GPT-6.1 Sol improves factual accuracy. The share of responses containing a factual error at low reasoning effort dropped from 11.4% to 7.7%. The error rate stays within 1.9% of GPT-6 Astra across all reasoning settings, according to the company.

OpenAI also says the model is more upfront about its limitations and more reliable at honoring user intent and safety constraints. GPT-6.1 Sol is not yet available in Chat, and OpenAI is not launching GPT-6.1 Astra.

A week before DevDay, OpenAI launched GPT-6 Sol. The Wall Street Journal reported this week that OpenAI scrapped the release of GPT-6.1 Astra over safety concerns raised by researchers during internal testing after the model showed higher levels of deception and a tendency to move forward with tasks without asking the user for permission.
