Pebble brings plugins to its watches, starting with developer SDK

Founder Eric Migicovsky says plugins will supply data and actions to apps and watchfaces; developers can enable them through the Pebble app.

Pebble founder Eric Migicovsky announced on social media that plugins are coming to Pebble watches, with the feature arriving first in the SDK for developers, according to Android Police.

The plugins are described as headless apps that supply data or actions to other apps, watchfaces and the Index agent. They are written in JavaScript and run in the background inside the Pebble app on the user's phone.

Because the plugins run locally on the handset rather than off the watch, Pebble presents the setup as more secure. Under the new system, watchfaces will no longer need hardcoded complications.

A new permissions system accompanies the feature: users must approve which faces, apps and plugins can access location, internet access and other resources.

Developers who want to try the functionality can turn it on from the Pebble app's Settings menu, then Debug, then Use Experimental Plugins.

Older context

Google released the Pebble source code, after which Migicovsky said on social media that Pebble was coming back. In January 2025 there was talk that the brand could resurface, and Pebble later introduced the Pebble Index 01, a completely different product.
