Rimini Street Study: 90% of VMware Customers Eye Vendor Switch

A Rimini Street study finds 90% of VMware decision-makers are considering alternative vendors as Broadcom's licensing costs rise.

A new study by Rimini Street has found that 90% of VMware decision-makers are considering alternative vendors due to higher licensing costs under Broadcom, according to techradar.com.

The study also found that 66% of surveyed VMware customers are considering third-party support, while 18% are already using it.

Cost concerns extend to licensing models: 54% of respondents said they are unhappy with the end of perpetual licenses. However, 48% of existing perpetual license customers have no plans to move away from VMware Cloud Foundation.

Three in five surveyed businesses are considering multi-hypervisor strategies, the study found. Respondents cited operational complexity (40%), managing multiple vendors (38%), security with an expanded attack surface (37%) and upskilling workers (37%) as migration challenges.

Broadcom acquired VMware and made licensing changes, including ending perpetual licenses.
