Modder Solders Extra Wires to RTX 5090 Power Rails as 12VHPWR Runs Hot
A Reddit mod routes an overheating RTX 5090's power to a distributor with dual 8-pin connectors, reporting a 40C joint peak in a 48-hour test.
A modder has shared a custom power distributor modification for the Nvidia GeForce RTX 5090, aimed at a card whose 12VHPWR connector was overheating. The modification solders additional connections to the RTX 5090's PCB power rails and routes them to a distributor fitted with two female 8-pin connectors, as reported by Tom's Hardware.
Reddit user u/DallasGrave posted the work. In the modder's own stress test, the card ran at 550W for 48 hours and reportedly never exceeded 40C at the joint.
The modder said a PNY-specific card with a similar modification would be available directly from GRAVEPC.com, with full warranty coverage.
Ongoing connector concerns
The 16-pin 12VHPWR connector has previously been linked to overheating and melting issues on certain Nvidia graphics cards. As covered in a recent story about a third-party cable melting in use, PNY has not been reliable about honoring warranties for the 12VHPWR issue when third-party cables are involved. Tom's Hardware has also covered a previous power mod on a Galax RTX 5090.
