Sendai Bank Deposits Birth Weight in Yen for New Babies
Sendai Bank's Sukusuku Bako service, started October 1, 2026, credits an amount in yen equal to a child's birth weight into new accounts opened in the child's name.
Sendai Bank has begun a service that deposits an amount of yen equal to a child's birth weight into a newly opened account in the child's name, under the childcare support project Sukusuku Bako in Miyagi Prefecture. The bank said the service started on October 1, 2026, according to etnews.com.
The service is open to children under 6 years old who received the Sukusuku Bako baby box. A deposit of at least 30,000 yen into the new account is required. The benefit can be received only once per child, and children who already have an account in their own name are excluded.
Birth weight is verified through records in the maternal and child health handbook. Sendai Bank also provides one roll of animal-patterned toilet paper in the baby box at its own expense.
The bank said the birth congratulatory cash idea came from an internal employee's suggestion, and that it aims to encourage early account opening and long-term use of the account as a main account.
