Shopify Opens Catalog to Any AI Agent for Purchases
Shoppers can link an AI agent to their Shop account, browse over a billion listings and check out with Shop Pay, with buyer approval for each order.
Shopify announced on October 13, 2026 that shoppers can now connect any AI agent to their account on Shop, the company-owned platform that consolidates orders and tracks packages, so the agent can browse Shopify's catalog of more than a billion listings and buy products on the shopper's behalf. According to The Verge, the feature does not require a partnership integration with Shopify.
Customers connect an agent to their Shop account, and checkout is handled through the one-click Shop Pay feature inside the conversation with the agent. Orders placed through an agent are funneled back to the Shop app, and buyers must approve each purchase.
Shopify markets the feature as a 'personal shopper' that users can give rules, such as budget guardrails or fast-shipping-only products. The catalog includes items both on and off Shopify storefronts.
Earlier partnerships and industry disputes
In September 2025, Shopify announced a partnership with Meta to let its Muse agent browse and purchase items on a human's behalf. The tech industry, including Google and Amazon, is investing in AI-driven shopping tools where an agent buys things for a user. There is an ongoing dispute between Amazon and AI companies such as Perplexity, and more recently Meta's Muse, over whether agents should be able to shop on a customer's behalf.
