Snapchat turns off Find Friends by default for UK under-18s

Ofcom says it will hold Snap to account on completing the rollout this month, and that age checks are due by the end of the year.

Snapchat has begun rolling out a change that switches its Find Friends feature off by default for users in the UK under 18, according to Ofcom. The regulator said the rollout starts this month and that it will hold Snap to account on completing it.

Find Friends uses information such as age, location and existing friends and followers to suggest people to add, according to Snap. Under the change, the feature will no longer be active by default for younger UK users.

Oliver Griffiths, director for Ofcom's Online Safety Group, said Snap will add age checks by the end of this year. The regulator can fine non-compliant companies up to 18 million pounds or 10 percent of qualifying worldwide revenue.

Pressure on child safety

Ofcom has previously accused Snapchat of not doing enough to protect minors. Earlier this year, the UK announced plans to ban social media for users under 16, announced by former Prime Minister Keir Starmer.

The European Union has also opened a formal investigation into Snap over possible breaches of the Digital Services Act, particularly on protecting younger users. Engadget reported the Snapchat change.
