Sony's MDR-3R headphones bring USB-C to a 1979 classic for $59.99
The wired MDR-3R keep the original 23mm drivers and need no charging, while a Stranger Things Edition sells for $79.99.
Sony has launched the MDR-3R headphones, a modern version of its original MDR-3, and they are available now in the US for $59.99 through Sony, Amazon and other retailers, according to gsmarena.com. A Stranger Things Edition is also on sale at $79.99.
The MDR-3R add USB-C connectivity to the classic design and use 23mm driver units, the same as the original MDR-3. Sony says the tuning stays close to the MDR-3's sound signature with subtle refinements.
The headphones include a built-in microphone for calls and an in-line remote. They require no charging, pairing or updates, and work as soon as they are plugged in. The construction is lightweight and open-ear, with blue and orange ear pads that can be swapped, and the packaging and instruction manual take cues from the MDR-3's.
Stranger Things Edition
The MDR-3R Stranger Things Edition is inspired by Max's headphones in the Netflix series. It carries an engraved Stranger Things logo, red and black ear pads and custom packaging.
The original MDR-3 was released in 1979 alongside the Walkman TPS-L2 cassette player.
