Tesla Adds Emergency Drive Away for Supercharger Escapes
Tesla's new Emergency Drive Away lets drivers shift into Drive while still plugged in at a Supercharger, but only for newer models in the US.
Tesla has announced a new feature called Emergency Drive Away, which allows drivers to shift into Drive while the charger is still attached to the car. The company revealed the feature on X with a short demo showing how it can be activated.
The feature requires upgrading to the latest software and currently only works with Superchargers in the US. Pre-2021 Model S and Model X vehicles are not supported.
Tesla warns that deliberate misuse will invoke additional penalties, and states that electrical and civil costs can be up to $25k if the feature is used.
The announcement follows a shooting in Twin Falls, Idaho, in August 2026, when a driver was shot inside a Tesla taxi he was charging at an In-N-Out Burger location. After the incident, Tesla owners called for the automaker to implement a quick get-away system.
