Amazing Spider-Man #1000 Retells Origin from Cop's View

Marvel Comics released The Amazing Spider-Man #1000 today, and with it a guest anniversary story that offers a new angle on the wall-crawler's well-known origin. Titled "I Can Never Rest," the story is written by Dan Slott with art by Marcos Martin, colors by Muntsa Vicente, and letters by Joe Caramagna.

Rather than following Peter Parker, "I Can Never Rest" centers on NYPD captain Arthur Simekski, the officer who pursued the burglar responsible for Uncle Ben's death. The story retells Spider-Man's origin through Simekski's perspective, adding a law-enforcement viewpoint to a moment that has traditionally been defined by Peter's personal guilt.

The story is the last of seven special guest anniversary stories included in the milestone issue, closing out the collection of guest contributions.

A familiar origin, a different lens

Spider-Man's classic origin has been told and adapted many times since the character's creation in the 1960s. The new issue joins that tradition by shifting the focus to a minor figure from the original story and expanding his role.

That approach echoes earlier comics: in Amazing Spider-Man #15, a police officer speaks to Spider-Man about letting the burglar go, a moment that already linked the hero's origin to the police perspective. "I Can Never Rest" builds on that connection for the character's 1000th issue.
