The company said 2,800 customers who may have entered information on the credit card payment page during the incident may have had cardholder name, full 16-digit card number, expiration date and security code exposed; those customers were contacted individually by email. Up to 402,466 credit cards, excluding duplicates, may have had partial information such as the last four digits and expiration date exposed.
It also said 7,673 customers who placed orders on October 22 may have had order information exposed, including names, addresses, telephone numbers, email addresses, order details, amounts and payment methods. Information relating to 202 orders was viewed without authorization, and the company treats all 7,673 associated orders as possibly affected.
Good Smile Company took the online store down on October 23 when it discovered the breach and began investigating. A malicious program was present on the site's credit card payment page from October 21 at 1:55 p.m. JST to October 23 at 7:00 a.m. JST, and information about its installation was discovered on October 28 shortly after 6:30 p.m. JST. The company reported the incident to Japan's Personal Information Protection Commission in line with Japanese law.
