Australia's Fair Work Ombudsman: No Leave Entitlement Covers GTA6 Launch Day

The workplace regulator said carer's, community service and parental leave do not apply to the November 19 game launch, so workers must negotiate with employers.

Australia's Fair Work Ombudsman has said that no legally guaranteed leave entitlement covers taking a day off for the launch of GTA6, meaning workers who want the day free must negotiate with their employer. The regulator addressed the question in an Instagram post, according to inven.co.kr.

The FWO said none of the National Employment Standards unpaid leave entitlements apply to a video game launch, including carer's leave, community service leave and parental leave. Workers seeking time off for the release would therefore need to agree unpaid leave with their employer, at the employer's discretion.

The regulator also advised workers to apply for the leave in advance.

Employers make their own calls

Burger Motorsports, a California car performance parts company, decided to close for business on November 19, the GTA6 release date, after many employees requested leave.

GTA6 is scheduled to launch on November 19 for PS5 and Xbox Series X|S.

In August, the 9th Engineer Battalion at Fort Stewart, Georgia, offered soldiers who signed a re-enlistment contract four days of special leave in November, which battalion commander Ryan Hodgson wrote in a memo was designed around the game's release.
