BioWare, Studio Behind Mass Effect and Dragon Age, Has Been Shut Down
The studio behind Baldur's Gate, Mass Effect and Dragon Age has closed, prompting tributes from fans, developers and composers who worked on its games.
BioWare, the developer behind western RPGs including Baldur's Gate, Mass Effect and Dragon Age, has been shut down. The closure was reported by Kotaku, which published a collection of memories, praise and mourning submitted by fans, developers, creators and media.
The tributes gathered by Kotaku came from people who had followed the studio's work across its role-playing games. Among those contributing were Phil Morgan, host of the Deleted Saves Podcast; Chuck Zimmerheld, a Giant Bomb contributor and Baldur's Gate fan; Jeremy Greco, a BioWare fan; and Jerram Carr, a junior narrative designer and Dragon Age fan.
Composer Jack Wall also appears among those remembered in the collection. Wall composed the music for the first two Mass Effect games.
The studio's reputation was built in part on Baldur's Gate, released in 1998, which impressed players with its character customization, story and writing. Baldur's Gate 2 arrived in the year 2000.
Dragon Age: Origins followed, and one contributor recalled playing it on PS3 in 2010. BioWare's credits also include Mass Effect and Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic.
