Bungie's Josh Deane: Destiny plans do not depend on Marathon
Bungie product head Josh Deane said players should not buy Marathon as a donation, after his blog post sparked concern about Destiny 2's future.
Bungie product head Josh Deane said on social media that the studio's Destiny plans are "in no way contingent" on Marathon, according to gamesradar.com. The clarification followed a blog post in which Deane set out plans for a new forever Destiny and a Destiny Legacy project.
In that post, Deane wrote that nothing could help bridge Bungie into the future more than Marathon rapidly evolving and becoming sustainable. Players read the line as meaning that Destiny 2's health would depend on how Marathon performs.
Deane responded in a series of tweets, saying the Destiny plan does not hinge on Marathon and that players should not buy Marathon as a donation. He added that players should only buy or play something from Bungie that inspires them.
Bungie is also adding more Destiny elements to Marathon, including work on a PvE mode.
Falling player numbers
In September, Bungie acknowledged that Marathon did not reach as many players as it had hoped. The game's Steam peak stood at 88,000 players, and its daily average has fallen to around 2,000 to 3,000. Former Marathon game director Joe Ziegler previously said the game was never meant to replace Destiny 2.
