Canada petition to save BioWare certified, forcing government reply

Petition e-7898, which asks Ottawa to fund BioWare's independence from Electronic Arts, passed 4,800 signatures and now requires an official response.

A Canadian parliamentary petition calling on the federal government to intervene after Electronic Arts shut down BioWare and canceled its new Mass Effect Universe game has been certified, with more than 4,800 signatures, according to wccftech.com. Certification obliges the government to issue an official response.

Petition e-7898 was started by citizen Brendan Routh. It asks Ottawa to fund BioWare's independence from Electronic Arts, to protect Canadian businesses from foreign corporate interests, and to preserve the studio's cultural contribution.

Don Davies of the New Democratic Party is presenting the petition in Canada's Parliament. A separate Change.org petition about the closure is nearing 310,000 signatures.

The certification was announced on November 7, 2026, the date of N7 Day, the annual celebration of the Mass Effect franchise.

Documentary on the studio's final days

Two days before the report, Deadline reported that filmmakers Shane Fennessey and Adam Scorgie are producing a documentary, Massive Effect: The Bioware Story, which will air on Canada's Super Channel. Filming began two years earlier and continued through the closure, according to that report.

In 2018, BioWare founders Greg Zeschuk and Ray Muzyka were awarded the Order of Canada for the developer's impact on video games. New Democratic Party leader Avi Lewis had publicly called for the government to save BioWare.
