CyberConnect2 CEO Says Digital-Only Future Benefits Developers

Hiroshi Matsuyama argues disc-free distribution is more profitable, citing high digital sales at Capcom and Square Enix.

Hiroshi Matsuyama, CEO of CyberConnect2, has argued in a post on X that a complete shift to digital game distribution would be "nothing but a positive thing" from a developer's perspective, according to GamesRadar.

Matsuyama said digital releases are more profitable for studios because physical copies require buying discs and game cards directly from manufacturers such as Nintendo and Sony. He added that physical copies "can't win in terms of convenience" today.

He pointed to Capcom and Square Enix as publishers with over 90% digital sales, and said Grand Theft Auto VI is digital-only because it is too big to fit on a physical disc.

Matsuyama also said discs are "doomed to fail," but expects codes in boxes to remain. Sony has decided to end all physical disc production for new games on PlayStation consoles in 2028.
