Blizzard confirms Diablo 5 is post-apocalyptic, set 100 years after Diablo 4

Players will travel with a caravan that grows as they meet survivors who become merchants and craftspeople, Blizzard says.

Blizzard has confirmed that Diablo 5 is set in the post-apocalyptic genre, with the story taking place 100 years after the events of Diablo 4. The announcement details were reported by gamerant.com.

In Diablo 5, the apocalypse has already happened. Players explore what is left of Sanctuary rather than fighting to prevent its fall.

Travel in the game is built around a caravan that grows as players encounter survivors, who then take on roles as merchants and craftspeople. Narrative director Jennifer Hepler said gathering survivors is one of the mechanisms of the story.

Despite the shift in setting, Blizzard describes Diablo 5 as an action RPG at its core.

What came before

In Diablo 4, Mephisto was defeated and Sanctuary entered a Golden Era. After that period, Diablo returned, defeated the world's heroes and conquered Sanctuary — the event that sets up the world players will find in Diablo 5.
