Epic to widen Linux support for Epic Games Launcher, restore AppImage
Epic Games says Fedora, SteamOS, CachyOS and Omarchy are targets as it evaluates Linux packaging formats, according to GamingOnLinux.
Epic Games plans to support as many Linux distributions as possible with the new Epic Games Launcher, including Fedora, SteamOS, CachyOS and Omarchy, the company's Communications Director Jake Jones said. Epic will also restore the AppImage package for the launcher this month, according to GamingOnLinux.
Jones said Epic is testing and evaluating packaging formats for Linux distribution. The launcher's Preview version initially shipped as an AppImage before being replaced with a .deb package aimed at Debian and Ubuntu.
Epic's FAQ, which currently states that Fedora support is coming soon, sits behind the wider plan outlined by Jones. The company has not given a date for when the additional distributions will be supported.
Packaging questions remain open
The return of the AppImage addresses users who were left without that option after the switch to .deb. Which format Epic settles on for the other distributions, and when, is still being evaluated.
