Eternal Anima JRPG Announced at Tokyo Game Show 2026

A new time-travel JRPG from Chrono Trigger lead programmer Makoto Shioda, with 40-year genre veteran Katsuhisa Higuchi involved, was unveiled at Tokyo Game Show 2026.

Eternal Anima, a new time-travel JRPG, was announced at Tokyo Game Show 2026, according to animenewsnetwork.com. The game is directed by Makoto Shioda, who served as lead programmer on Chrono Trigger.

Katsuhisa Higuchi, a 40-year veteran of JRPG development, is involved in the project. Chrono Trigger was the first title on which Higuchi served as lead programmer.

The game features a battle system called Future Sight Battles and a protagonist named Wade. Its theme is legacy, explored through time travel between two eras, and it is planned for PC, PlayStation and Xbox platforms.

The project dates back more than five years, when Shioda drafted plans for a JRPG and Higuchi embraced the idea. Kazushige Nojima and Hitoshi Sakimoto were asked to join partly due to connections from their days at Square. Nojima is the scenario writer, Sakimoto is the music producer, Keisuke Makino is the scenario draft writer and Hironao Fukuda is the scenario director. Max Berthelot is the character designer.
