Fate of the Galaxy, free Star Wars total conversion, launches on PC, Linux and Mac

The volunteer-built FreeSpace Open project lets players fly as a Rebel Alliance pilot, an Empire pilot or an independent privateer.

The volunteer team behind Fate of the Galaxy released the free Star Wars total conversion for the FreeSpace Open engine on November 6, 2026, with builds for PC, Linux and Mac. The project is available from its official site and Mod DB, according to gamingonlinux.com.

Players pick a side before flying: a Rebel Alliance pilot, a Galactic Empire pilot, or an independent privateer. The package bundles interconnected story campaigns, customizable dynamic campaigns, arcade and training scenarios, standalone missions, and quick LAN multiplayer matches.

The conversion ships with more than 64 ships, fully working cockpits, customizable weapon loadouts and the ability to command wingmen. Control options include mouse-and-keyboard setups with separate maneuver and aiming modes, support for up to four separate joystick devices, head tracking and VR.

All missions are built with the FRED mission editor, which is included; missions are text-based files that can be shared. The team states that every asset was made by humans and that no generative AI was used.

Hardware demands are modest: with adjusted graphics options the game runs smoothly without a dedicated graphics card, and the Linux version reportedly runs well on Fedora KDE. FreeSpace Open, the engine underneath, has supported Linux for a long time, while the team spent years building content and working with contributors and the wider FreeSpace Open community before launch.
