Gears of War: E-Day Devs Debunk Sera Gravity Muscle Theory
The Coalition's art director and brand director say heavy armor and a 6,000-calorie diet, not Sera's gravity, explain the Gears' builds.
The developers behind Gears of War: E-Day have debunked a long-standing fan theory that the high gravity of the series' planet, Sera, is the reason its characters are so muscular. Art director Aryan Hanbeck and brand director Nicole Fawcette addressed the theory during an interview with Polygon at Gamescom 2026.
Hanbeck said the idea that Sera's gravity explains the characters' physiques is false. Fawcette said Sera is an Earth-like planet and that no hard lore about its gravitational field has been established.
Instead, Fawcette pointed to diet as a more likely explanation, saying the characters eat around 6,000 calories a day. The creatives also said the Gears are larger due to heavy armor and intense training.
Two decades of speculation
The theory has circulated in the Gears of War fandom for about two decades, often on Reddit, where fans have suggested explanations ranging from stronger gravity to steroid use. The series takes place on Sera, a planet with two moons, 26-hour days, and years averaging 440 days.
