GOG Hopes to Sell Made-to-Order Physical PC Games
GOG's Marcin Paczynski said the store wants customers to order a physical game from their shelf and have it delivered, but logistics and publisher approvals remain hurdles.
GOG hopes to one day sell made-to-order physical versions of games listed on its store, according to Marcin Paczynski, the company's senior business development and partnerships manager. In an interview with GamesRadar, Paczynski said his ideal dream is to let customers buy physical editions of games available on GOG, ordered from their shelf and delivered to them.
He said building a physical retail business is very complicated for GOG, requiring logistics, storage and additional approvals from publishers.
Paczynski said the idea of selling physical PC games has been floating around GOG for years and that he hopes the store will be able to do it at some point. The company's current initiative lets collectors preserve classic big boxes with 3D models and printable box art, which he described as small steps toward physical PC games.
GOG has aimed to keep old games alive in a digital, DRM-free format, and physical games have been effectively dead on PC for decades while slowly disappearing on consoles.
