The Legend of California delayed to 2027, Kintsugiyama confirms
Studio co-creator Jeff Kaplan said an alpha build had performance issues; a new Steam alpha runs Nov. 12 to Nov. 18.
Kintsugiyama has confirmed that The Legend of California will not enter early access in 2026, pushing the survival game's release to 2027. The studio addressed the schedule during a Reddit AMA on October 25, 2026, according to Polygon.
The move had already been signalled: the game's official X account mentioned a 2027 window in a reply months before the AMA, a comment that went largely unnoticed. The survival game had previously been slated for a Steam Early Access launch in 2026.
Jeff Kaplan, co-creator of Overwatch and a developer at Kintsugiyama, said an alpha build had performance issues and did not meet the studio's standards for release. He said the team is working to hit server performance metrics before launch and feels good about the feature and content side. Kaplan added that the game was supposed to already be in early access by now.
When it does arrive in 2027, The Legend of California will launch into early access on Steam and the Epic Games Store. Former Overwatch developer Tim Ford confirmed discussions with Nvidia about a GeForce Now release. The game will not come to consoles during the early access period.
Another alpha will run on Steam between November 12 and November 18.
