Mass Effect fan petition passes 187,000 signatures after BioWare closure
A Change.Org petition asks EA to fund continued Mass Effect development or license the IP to another studio.
A Change.Org petition calling on EA to save Mass Effect has passed 187,000 signatures. The petition asks the publisher to commit to continued development of the series with proper funding, adequate staffing and time allocation.
As an alternative, the petition suggests EA could license the Mass Effect IP to another studio. It was started by Joe Smith.
The petition follows EA's announcement earlier this week of widespread job cuts and the closure of BioWare. The cuts also affected developers at Respawn, Maxis, Full Circle, EA Motive and other EA-owned studios. The closure came months after Saudi Arabia's $55bn leveraged buyout of EA.
Attention has also focused on a cancelled Mass Effect project titled Mass Effect Universe. A content creator who claimed to have served on a "Mass Effect Council" posted alleged details about the game. An internal trailer for Mass Effect Universe subsequently appeared and was confirmed real by BioWare after the studio's closure and the game's cancellation. Eurogamer reported on the petition.
