Miyamoto: Mario Doesn't Really Fight Bowser in Original Game

Speaking after receiving Japan's Order of Culture, Nintendo's Shigeru Miyamoto said the 1985 boss encounter was built around running right, not combat.

Shigeru Miyamoto said the most interesting thing about the original Super Mario Bros. is that Mario does not actually fight Bowser in the 1985 platformer. The Nintendo creator made the remark at a press conference after receiving the Japanese Order of Culture, according to gamesradar.com.

Miyamoto explained that during development the team struggled with how to create a climactic battle, and decided to make the boss encounter about running to the right. He described the Bowser fights as jumping over him and his projectiles to destroy the bridge beneath him.

He said Mario's later battles with Bowser became more like actual fights, citing Super Mario World and Super Mario 64. In Super Mario World, Mario fights Bowser by throwing explosives at his clown car, and in Super Mario 64 he grabs Bowser's tail and launches him into explosives.

Nintendo released the original Super Mario Bros. in 1985. Miyamoto received the Japanese Order of Culture and is the first game developer to win the award.
